Your Neighborhood Handyman

At Homepro Repair Handyman Service, we have a fondness for the neighborhoods that we work in. That’s why we will be showcasing some of our favorite St. Louis neighborhoods in upcoming posts. Whether it’s a personal connection we have to a particular neighborhood, the beauty of the architecture, or the appreciation of the culture of a particular neighborhood, we will be highlighting some of its best qualities and what makes it unique to us. By doing so, I hope you will learn a little about us along the way, and the city in which we live.

Neighborhoods are indicative of the era in which they were built. The materials and architecture representative of  the technology  and trends that were popular and available at the time. If you enjoy what you do and take your work seriously (which we do), It’s hard not to have an appreciation for the craftsman that came before you. We always like to point out that “we specialize in older homes”.  The reason for this we hope is obvious. It takes a lot more skill and knowledge to work with the materials used in old houses (e.g., plaster walls, brick exteriors, cast iron pipes) than newer homes. Technological advancements in  materials have made installations and repairs much easier than those of old. After doing home repairs and remodeling on so many older homes, you appreciate what the craftsman of old had to know and the physical work involved as well to complete a job.

When A customer calls me I usually ask “what part of the St. Louis area are you located in?” This not only tells me how far I have to drive to the job, but much of the time it tells me what type of home I will be working on. If they say “Lafayette Square” chances are it’s a three story Victorian and I may need to bring a tall ladder to reach a light fixture mounted to a 11′ ceiling. If they say “Crestwood” chances are it’s a single story mid century home. It gives me an idea if I’ll be patching drywall or repairing Plaster walls, replacing old galvanized pipes or repairing a leaky copper pipe, repairing old wooden sash box windows, or replacing with vinyl windows. Much of the time the customer doesn’t know one type of building material from the next. This is where experience comes into play. A handyman has to be able to repair or install a wide variety of items. We can’t possibly carry with us every tool and all materials necessary to complete every job. We have to rely on our experience to know what speciality tools and what materials to bring so we can save time and our customers money.
